How to Find a Professional Piercer

Written by: Heidi
Topic: Getting a Piercing

From time to time, readers of the Freshtrends piercing and body jewelry blog write to ask where to go for a piercing where they can be sure it’s safe, clean, etc. Obviously I don’t know a piercer in every single town, but a safe bet is to check out the Association of Professional Piercers (APP) at safepiercing.org. From their site name, safety is one of the main concerns of the association.

Any piercer that took the time to join the association would have to take the time to apply, pay membership fees, and agree to comply by certain standards. In fact it’s the industry associations that usually set the standards for their industry. If your piercer takes the time to go through the process of application and cares enough to pay the annual fee, then chances are they take the time to ensure their studio is safe and clean and they care about the image they have as a professional piercer.

On the SafePiercing.org website, you can go to locate a piercing studio to find someone in your area who’s a member (thought the website says you should double check and ask the studio to be sure).  If you’re a piercer and you’re not a member, you might want to check it out this site since it will most definitely help your business to be able to show off your membership.

I’m a fan of having standards in place when it comes to any professional working with my body. From my massage therapist to my tattoo artist, they are all involved in the industry and have the credentials to show for it. That’s my personal preference - what about you? Are you concerned about professional credentials when it comes to your piercings and tattoos?

Man Breaks Guinness World Record for Most Piercings in One Sitting —1197 WOW!

1197 Piercings - World Record!

1197 Piercings - World Record!

It is amazing how many world records are out there and what it actually takes to get there. What I like about this Jeremy Stroud character that just recently broke the Guinness World Record for the most piercings in one sitting, topping out with 1197, is that he was no stranger to the piercing and tattoo community. He knew, exactly, the exhilarating pain of both tattoos and piercings, yet he admitted that while trying this feat, his body could only handle so much. It was starting to shut down. He made a very smart choice and he  decided to stop once he surpassed the previous piercing record, despite the fact that his original goal was 2,000 piercings. He also researched prior to the big day, tested different body parts for their “pierce-ablity “ , as well as had EMT’s on hand. I am still not sold that most people who set out to break a record should even be doing it, but at least he was smart about it and used a professional body modification specialist to help him. What do you think? Are there any records out there that you think you could maybe go for?

“I’ve been around the tattoo community, and a lot of my friends are in it,” Stroud said. “They’ll sit around and say, ‘Hey you want to do this?’ And I’ll get it pierced and pull it out.” The 18-gauge surgical needles inserted over about five hours at an Arlington tattoo shop — about 800 in his back, 300 in his right arm, 50 in his right leg and 20 or so in his left arm - left scars across his back. “They’re so close together that they leave a line. It kind of looks like I had stitches from my wrist all the way up to my shoulder,” he said.

Stroud, a diesel mechanic for a large freight carrier, isn’t new to tattoos and piercings, known as body modification. He sees it as art, with five piercings on his face, several tattoos and gouged ears. “A lot of people say I did it for this reason or this means something to me,” he said. “But not for me….”

He said he got a “smiley face sunshine” on his leg because he was mad.

“I stay away from meaningful tattoos now,” Stroud said. “Now it’s more art. I just like being covered up in it.”

And he’s used to the stares that go along with being covered in tattoos.

“When most people get to know me they say, ‘You’re a totally different person ” he said. “Yes, it’s called stereotyping.” than what you look like,’

Doing His Homework

Stroud had been planning the record-setting piercing session for eight months, at the urging of Tyson Turk, an Arlington body modification artist.

Last year, they began testing parts of Stroud’s body to see whether he could tolerate the pain. And in March, Turk did a test run of 50 piercings in the small of Stroud’s back.

“I did my homework,” Stroud said. “This isn’t just something you can go out and do; you’ve got to be prepared for it.”

In fact, making the record official required a witness, a photographer, notarized statements, two EMTs and months of paperwork.

Turk had experience in that area. He also did the piercings for the previous record holder, a Dallas man who received 900. He also plans to claim the record for the world’s fastest piercer.

But Turk’s coaching couldn’t prepare Stroud for all the pain. As the session wore on, each piercing produced radiating pain that felt like an intense sunburn. “After a while I guess the body just starts rejecting all the needles,” Stroud said. “It felt like my back was on fire and my arm was on fire. It was a totally different kind of pain. I just wanted those needles out of me.”

Stroud was hooked up to a heart monitor during the session.“As soon as we got the needles out I was fine, but during I started to get really slow, and my pulse jumped up to 130.”

The original plan had been to do 2,000 piercings. “I made it to 1,200 and my body was getting ready to shut down,” he said. “I had no idea what I was getting into.”

That’s one reason Stroud isn’t sure what he’ll do if someone breaks his record. The past record holder, Robert Jesus Rubio of Dallas, is already talking about it, Stroud said.

“There’s a reason it’s a record,” Stroud said. “He made it to 900 and his body had enough. And now that I’ve gone through it, I see what’s really happening during the process.”

Me and My Monroe

Written by: Kro0608
Topic: Types of Piercing

I am torn. I love the Monroe, as well as tiny nose piercings. If I were 15 years younger and not already in a company fo a long time where everyone knows me, I think I would do it in a heart beat. Where I become split is that I think piercings can add so much to the perception of your personality or at least the expression of it, both good and bad, but I feel like I have worked with or known people for so long that I wonder how it would be received. The other part of me says who cares. Who cares what your daughter’s school thinks, or my boss, or Great Aunt Gertrude. I am sure I will end up never getting it done and then regretting and thinking about it forever. So I salute you, if you have piercings and the individuality enough to do what it is that you really want.

6 Creative Places to Pierce Your Body

Written by: Heidi
Topic: Body-Art Practices, Getting a Piercing, Types of Piercing

Body piercings will make most non-pierced people think of one of four places: the bellybutton, the nipple, the genital area, and of course the face. But if you want something a little bit different here’s some unusual body piercings to check out. These are called surface piercings because they don’t go in one side and out the other like the ear, nose, bellybutton, etc. If you get a surface piercing be sure to go to a professional that has the special surface bar - these ones are especially easy targets for infections.

1. The Chest Piercing

From a simple barbell to a full-on corset, chest piercings have gone far beyond the nipple.

Sternum Piercing

While the corset on the back has been getting more and more popular, it’s not seen as much on the chest.

Chest Corset

A little bit higher on the chest, the collarbone piercing is more beautiful and more permanent than any old necklace.

2. The Neck Piercing

I’m a fan of neck piercings on the back of the neck. The neck is a big time erogenous zone, and a nice barbell brings the eye to this elegant area of the body.

If you really want that shock factor, piercings on the front of the neck definitely will bring it … to be honest I’m a little freaked out by some neck piercings like this neck corset. When you learn any kind of self-defense, you learn that you need to protect ya neck - it’s a basic instinct - maybe that’s why I get a little queasy about doing anything to the front of my neck.

3.  The Leg Piercing

Speaking of corsets, here’s one I hadn’t seen before - the leg corset. This one must take a lot of care to make sure it doesn’t catch on anything, since the legs are what moves us around.

4. The Foot Piercing

It might be easier to get a foot piercing a little further up like this one - no worries about your shoes getting in the way ;)

5. The Hand Piercing

There are lots of options for hand piercings, you can even get a piercing as an alternative wedding ring. A surface piercing on the side of the hand is definitely different - I like this symmetry of this one on both hands.

6. Last but definitely not least! The butt piercing! Okay let’s keep it clean here folks, this is at the top of the butt crack.

The options you have for surface piercings are as limitless as … well, the entire surface of your skin, really. If you have a surface piercing send your pics to blog@freshtrends.com and we’ll post it up.
