How to Find a Professional Piercer

Written by: Heidi
Topic: Getting a Piercing

From time to time, readers of the Freshtrends piercing and body jewelry blog write to ask where to go for a piercing where they can be sure it’s safe, clean, etc. Obviously I don’t know a piercer in every single town, but a safe bet is to check out the Association of Professional Piercers (APP) at safepiercing.org. From their site name, safety is one of the main concerns of the association.

Any piercer that took the time to join the association would have to take the time to apply, pay membership fees, and agree to comply by certain standards. In fact it’s the industry associations that usually set the standards for their industry. If your piercer takes the time to go through the process of application and cares enough to pay the annual fee, then chances are they take the time to ensure their studio is safe and clean and they care about the image they have as a professional piercer.

On the SafePiercing.org website, you can go to locate a piercing studio to find someone in your area who’s a member (thought the website says you should double check and ask the studio to be sure).  If you’re a piercer and you’re not a member, you might want to check it out this site since it will most definitely help your business to be able to show off your membership.

I’m a fan of having standards in place when it comes to any professional working with my body. From my massage therapist to my tattoo artist, they are all involved in the industry and have the credentials to show for it. That’s my personal preference - what about you? Are you concerned about professional credentials when it comes to your piercings and tattoos?

6 Creative Places to Pierce Your Body

Written by: Heidi
Topic: Body-Art Practices, Getting a Piercing, Types of Piercing

Body piercings will make most non-pierced people think of one of four places: the bellybutton, the nipple, the genital area, and of course the face. But if you want something a little bit different here’s some unusual body piercings to check out. These are called surface piercings because they don’t go in one side and out the other like the ear, nose, bellybutton, etc. If you get a surface piercing be sure to go to a professional that has the special surface bar - these ones are especially easy targets for infections.

1. The Chest Piercing

From a simple barbell to a full-on corset, chest piercings have gone far beyond the nipple.

While the corset on the back has been getting more and more popular, it’s not seen as much on the chest.

Chest Corset

A little bit higher on the chest, the collarbone piercing is more beautiful and more permanent than any old necklace.

2. The Neck Piercing

I’m a fan of neck piercings on the back of the neck. The neck is a big time erogenous zone, and a nice barbell brings the eye to this elegant area of the body.

If you really want that shock factor, piercings on the front of the neck definitely will bring it … to be honest I’m a little freaked out by some neck piercings like this neck corset. When you learn any kind of self-defense, you learn that you need to protect ya neck - it’s a basic instinct - maybe that’s why I get a little queasy about doing anything to the front of my neck.

3.  The Leg Piercing

Speaking of corsets, here’s one I hadn’t seen before - the leg corset. This one must take a lot of care to make sure it doesn’t catch on anything, since the legs are what moves us around.

4. The Foot Piercing

It might be easier to get a foot piercing a little further up like this one - no worries about your shoes getting in the way ;)

5. The Hand Piercing

There are lots of options for hand piercings, you can even get a piercing as an alternative wedding ring. A surface piercing on the side of the hand is definitely different - I like this symmetry of this one on both hands.

6. Last but definitely not least! The butt piercing! Okay let’s keep it clean here folks, this is at the top of the butt crack.

The options you have for surface piercings are as limitless as … well, the entire surface of your skin, really. If you have a surface piercing send your pics to blog@freshtrends.com and we’ll post it up.

Alternative Wedding Rings

Written by: Heidi
Topic: FAQs, Getting a Piercing, Material and Info, Types of Piercing

The first time I saw tattoo wedding rings was on this beautiful young woman I looked up to. Since then I have always thought that if I get married I would do something unique like matching tattoos for a wedding ring.

Another unique alternative to regular wedding rings or engagement rings is finger piercing. Finger piercings could be done for weddings or engagements.

There are so many different choices, whether you get a piece that is a brave twist on a traditional design, like this impressive one below in gold with a diamond, or it could be a nice simple barbell.

You could also get a ring that goes around your finger with the piercing through the bottom.

A microdermal piercing on the finger ring would also be nice. The gem looks like it’s sitting on the skin. There’s a flat metal bit under your skin that holds it there.

I think the bond that is created by going to share the exhilarating pain of a tattoo or piercing will be more of a bond than just shopping for a wedding ring.

The one thing to remember about a finger piercing is that this is a piercing that generally takes a really long time to heal (up to a year) and you have to be so, so careful not to catch it on anything like your clothes, doors, etc and since your hands are in contact with so many things that are covered in bacteria on a daily basis, you have to be extra careful to keep those hands clean all the time. Eight Ways to Wear a Labret Piercing

Written by: Heidi
Topic: Fresh Trends!, Getting a Piercing, Types of Piercing

I find labret piercings to have this subtle sensuality about them because they bring attention to your lips.

“Labret” is from the Latin word “labrum” which means “lip,” so a labret piercing can really be anywhere around your mouth. Most people think a labret piercing is just under the lip, but you could have upper labret piercings too, like Monroe (or Madonna or Marilyn) and Medusa piercings (check the map of facial piercings to figure out which is which).

Here are some hot labret piercings:

Centered under the bottom lip, this is probably the most common labret piercing. You can go for simple and subtle, or try something a bit different.

You can wrap the labret piercing around your bottom lip. Talk about emphasizing that sultry pouty lip.

If you’re fidgety and have bad habits like me (grinding my teeth), a vertical labret piercing goes straight through the lip and won’t rub on your teeth, so you can save yourself the dentist lecture.

It’s not the Monroe, but I still find that a side labret piercing can look like a beauty mark too.

I’ve been seeing the Snakebite more lately (both sides). I like this one with the labret spikes so it really looks like fangs.

The Monroe piercing – this is the ultimate position for the “beauty mark” effect. The Monroe pays tribute to the original legend herself who made the beauty mark sexy.

Labret Piercing 8

The Medusa (upper labret) piercing is my personal favorite. My cousin has this piercing and I always found it looks bold and confident.

If you can’t pick just one, of course there’s always the full suite of labret piercings.

This one goes back to an earlier question … is less more? Like I said, my favorite labret piercing ever is the simple Medusa - just one simple subtle statement of confidence is so sexy. But this last one is definitely different and unique.
