Accessorize!

Different occasions can require special accessories. Jewelry can make or break an outfit. When either purchasing or just choosing which piece to wear, take a look at the clothes and ask yourself a couple of questions. Does it need to be dressed up or just subtlety accompanied? The answers will also depend on where you are going and what kind of an event it is.  Some of the best dressed people choose a simple black dress and adorn themselves with gorgeous earrings and a necklace. Gone are the days where everything has to be part of a matching set. As long as the colors coordinate, mix it up a bit! The same goes for other body jewelry. If you are going on vacation where you will be sporting a new bikini, why not treat yourself to several navel rings that you can switch out throughout the trip. If you typically wear a silver stud in your Monroe piercing, why not add some sparkle to your girls night out and get a diamond or cubic zurconia piece? The right piece of jewelry can update an old outfit too. With so many designs and styles to choose from, there are no excuses to let your wardrobe go stale! Accessorize!

Getting Your Child Pierced at Birth Could Increase Their Height

Written by: Tim Cowan
Topic: Random Yet Useful Info

Our brains, it seems, are able to push us in certain directions. The brain used to be thought of as a passive switchboard, activated only when stimulated by our external senses. Now we know that each signal imposes on a background of ongoing activity, is modified by this activity, and in turn modifies it. Studies have shown that there are critical periods of development during which an injection of certain hormones in minute amounts can have permanent effects upon development. One such study has indicated that piercing the lips or ears, or cutting or burning the skin, can increase median height or other physical factors and effect behavioral development.

The development of the human body is a unique process that each of us understand in our own way. Undoubtedly, there are factors that we have not taken notice of or have not received instruction on – certain stimuli that we are not given a full understanding of.

Do you think that your genetic makeup is determined solely by genetic recombination? I.e. do your parents provide you with all the genetic code that will indicate you future height, build, and other capacities? Has Darwin’s natural selection predetermined our state of being? Launder and Whiting1 think not. It seems that there are other factors, including our experiences, which shape us.

The data suggests that children within the first two or three years of life are in the critical period of development. The average superiority in height of children who have been stressed as a result of piercings, cuts, is more than two inches. The data is far from conclusive however, and additional study is underway, with the hope of pinpointing how our brains can influence our physical and behavioral development.

So bear in mind what the effect will be, if you are planning of having your child pierced at birth. Your piercing shop won’t be advertising the fact that getting a piercing may increase someone’s height, but you may want to do a little research anyway.

Piercing Parties-Say What?

Written by: Kro0608
Topic: Random Yet Useful Info

It has been a few times now that I have heard of Piercing Parties. It can be with an intimate group of friends, doing it themselves or hiring a professional- or opening the party up to whoever wants to come. Kind of like a Tupperware or Candle party except the parting gift is something a little more permanent. I don’t see anything wrong with this, as long as the proper sanitary measures are being taken. I think it could be a cool memory to have all your friends and you get pierced on the same night all while everyone is hanging out having something to eat and drink. If this is something that is of interest, you should contact your local tattoo parlor and see how many people they could accommodate in one evening (Not sure if they can allow food in their place but after everyone is done you could always go out after to commemorate the evening), or if there is someone willing to come to your house for a guaranteed amount of piercings or money. Again, safety first, make sure you are calling a reputable place and that the people coming to the party understand you are not responsible for any mishaps!

At what age should you peirce your kids?

At what age should you pierce a little girl’s ears? This is a tough one. There are so many schools of thought from “Do it early so they won’t mess with them or remember it” to “You should let them decide. What if they get older and decide they didn’t want earrings and now have the hole?” It all boils down to personal choice. I have a friend who waited to let her daughter choose and at the ripe old age of eight her daughter decided it was the big day. With pure exhilaration (Think about the first time you were getting pierced or the anticipation of a new tattoo or piercing), they set off to the mall. Once they got to the kiosk and picked out the earrings, it was time. The cold swab of alcohol, the tiny dab of dark blue ink on each lobe, the innocence of not knowing what to expect, then the gun popped and the little girl screamed. Though the pain really isn’t that bad, she freaked out and wouldn’t let the woman do the other ear. It took her over a month of only having one earring to build up the courage to go back and get the other one done. With constant reminders from her mother to stop touching the earrings she managed to avoid infection.

I personally chose to have my daughters ears pierced at six months old. I took her to the pediatrician’s office but not before enlisting the help of a seasoned friend (Her daughter is 3 years older than mine). I have to say that I am not sure I could have let them do the second ear had my friend not been there to talk me through it. In hindsight it really wasn’t that bad. My daughter barely cried after and never messed with them. She is almost 4 years old now and we are always looking for stylish earrings to mix things up. She doesn’t even realize that she shouldn’t have her ears pierced because every female she knows has them.

Now the question that I want to put out there is for boys… At what age is appropriate to get them pierced or allow them to make the choice? Also, what about piercings for other parts of the body? Navel ring? Eyebrow? Is high school age still too young?
