The latest trend in body piercing is definitely the septum. They are everywhere in the media, with celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, Lady Gaga, and Zoë Kravitz wearing beautiful jewelry in their septums. It’s easy to see why they have gone mainstream – they are a beautiful way to express your individuality with a variety of jewelry styles, they can be discreetly hidden, and you don’t even have to be pierced to get the look.

Here’s the rundown on septum piercings:

Find a reputable, experienced piercer. The placement of a septum piercing can be tricky and requires a bit of expertise to get it right. The proportion of your anatomy may dictate whether or not you are an acceptable candidate for this type of piercing. While that can be a major bummer, an improperly done piercing can cause complications that you certainly want to avoid.

The pain is similar to a nostril piercing. Everybody has a different tolerance for pain so you may want to consider this when thinking about getting it done. Your piercing will be tender for about 2 or 3 weeks and it will hurt if bumped and it can take up to 8 months to fully heal. If you take out your jewelry, you won’t see a visible scar; the longer you’ve had your piercing, the longer it will take for the hole to close.

You’ll be pierced with a circular/horseshoe barbell or captive bead ring (CBR). Septum piercings are easy to hide with a retainer, smaller piece of jewelry, or by flipping up a circular barbell into your nostrils. In fresh piercings, you can have your piercer flip it and leave it like that until it heals. The downside to that is you can’t show off your new body mod right away. If you have been pierced with the jewelry showing and must flip your barbell, soak it with warm water to loosen it up a little bit.

Now comes the fun part – the different styles of jewelry:

The Basics: You can’t go wrong with the basics; available in a variety of materials such as gold or titanium. A circular barbell, seamless segment ring, or captive bead ring works great.

Crescents: If you want to amp it up a bit, crescents are a great option. They have an edgy look, and are available in many materials, including organic wood, bone, and steel.

Clickers: Septum clickers take your piercing to another level. Ranging from simple steel to beautifully ornate, these are a must-have. Gold and gemstones are hot right now, especially rose gold.

Cheaters: Cheater septum jewelry allows you to try out the look before committing to the actual piercing, or are a fun accessory for a night out.
