Nose Ring Backing Types

Choosing The Style Nose Ring

Different types of nose ring backings

Explore the most common nose ring backings—how they work, their benefits, and tips for insertion and removal.

Twist / Screw Backing
Twist or screw nose ring backing

The twist (or screw) backing features a curved tail that gently spirals into the piercing. It holds securely and is one of the most commonly used nose ring styles.

  • Best for: Everyday wear and most nostril piercings
  • Typical length: ~¼" wearable section

Insert: Stabilize the piercing from inside, guide the post, then twist the tail. Remove: Reverse the twist while gently pulling out.

L-Shape Backing
L shape nose ring backing

The L-bend backing forms a 90° angle, offering easy insertion and a stable fit without needing a screw.

  • Best for: Healed nostril piercings
  • Note: Avoid bending back and forth excessively to preserve shape

Insert: Slide post in, then rotate the bend to sit flush. Remove: Reverse the bend and pull out gently.

Bone / Ball-End Backing
Bone or ball end backing for nose stud

A straight post with a small ball that “clicks” into place inside the nostril. It’s flush and subtle.

  • Best for: Healed piercings and minimalist looks

Insert/Remove: “Pop” the ball past the piercing using both hands. Use a little saline gel if needed.

Flat Back / Labret Backing
Flat back nose ring backing

A flat disc behind the nostril gives low-profile comfort. Comes in threaded or threadless options.

  • Best for: All-day comfort, minimal snagging
  • Threadless tip: Slight bend = secure fit; push to lock, pull apart to release
Seamless / Seam Ring
Seamless hoop nose ring

A continuous hoop with hidden ends. To preserve shape, always twist the seam to open—never pull apart.

  • Best for: Hoop aesthetic with minimal visibility

Insert: Twist open, guide through, twist closed. Remove: Twist and slide out gently.

Clicker / Segment Hoop
Clicker or segment nose hoop with hinge

Opens via hinge or removable segment. A great balance of ease and secure fit.

  • Best for: Healed piercings where you want an easy open/close mechanism

Open: Pinch along the seam to lift. Close: Align the pin and press until it clicks.
