Piercing Aftercare Cleansing Solutions

Piercing Aftercare Cleansing Solutions

So, you finally took the plunge and got a new piercing — congratulations! 🎉
Now it’s time to make sure it heals beautifully.

It might not sound glamorous, but a fresh piercing is technically an open wound, and it needs the same care and attention you’d give to any other part of your body while it heals. Until it’s fully healed, your piercing is vulnerable to bacteria, irritation, and infection, so consistent care is essential.

The good news? Proper aftercare is simple. With the right cleaning routine and a little patience, your piercing will heal cleanly — allowing you to enjoy your new jewelry for years to come (and maybe even start planning your next one 😉).

Cleansers for Your Piercing

Keeping your new piercing clean is the most important step toward healthy healing. There are two safe, professional options for daily cleansing:

  • Sterile saline solution

  • Antimicrobial or germicidal liquid soap

Sterile Saline Solution

Saline is simply salt water—but not all salt water is created equal. For piercings, only a sterile saline solution that closely matches your body’s natural salinity should be used.

If you’d like to make a simple at-home solution, dissolve ⅛–¼ teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt (no additives or iodine) into 1 cup (8 oz) of warm, sterile water — distilled or bottled water works best.

⚠️ Avoid using tap water or table salt. Tap water can contain bacteria or minerals that irritate the piercing, and table salt often has additives that can cause dryness or burning.

Pro Tip: More salt doesn’t mean better cleaning. A solution that’s too strong can dehydrate and irritate the skin around your piercing.

For best results, use a pre-mixed sterile saline spray — available in most pharmacies and designed specifically for wound care. It’s the safest, most convenient option for gentle, effective cleansing.

Antimicrobial or Germicidal Soap

An unscented, antimicrobial liquid soap is another effective option for keeping your piercing free from bacteria. You can find these soaps in the first aid section of most drugstores.

Choose a formula that is:

  • Unscented and dye-free (fragrances can cause irritation)

  • Mild and gentle (avoid harsh detergents or exfoliating ingredients)

To use, wash your hands thoroughly, apply a small amount of soap to the pierced area, and rinse completely with clean water. Pat dry with a disposable paper towel or sterile gauze.

Fresh Trends Tip 💡

For optimal results, we recommend sterile saline as your primary cleanser and antimicrobial soap only once per day or as advised by your piercer. Gentle, consistent care will help your piercing heal beautifully and minimize irritation.

How to Clean Your Piercing: Best Practices

  1. Wash your hands first. Use soap, scrub the backs of fingers, between fingers, and under nails for at least 20 seconds.

  2. Apply saline gently. If using spray, mist from 2–3 inches away. If using soak method, hold gauze compressed to the piercing for 1–2 minutes.

  3. Do not twist or move the jewelry. Twisting can damage the healing tissue or disrupt new skin.

  4. Pat dry using clean, disposable materials. Use cotton gauze or paper towel gently—avoid towels or fabrics that may catch or harbor bacteria.
