How to size a flat back stud

A flat back stud has a decorative top that threads onto a post ending in a smooth, flat disc. The disc rests against the back of the piercing so it sits flush, won't snag, and stays comfortable enough to sleep on. Two measurements make it fit right: gauge (post thickness) and length (post span).

Gauge — the thickness of the post

Gauge is how thick the post is, and it should match what your piercer used so the stud seats securely without shifting. The scale runs in reverse — a smaller number is a thicker post, so an 18G post is thinner than a 16G. Most flat back ear and nostril piercings use 18G or 16G.

Length — the post that spans your piercing

Length is the distance from the flat disc to the front of the stud — the part that passes through your piercing, measured without the decorative top. While healing, a little extra room (often 8mm) leaves space for swelling; once healed, a shorter post (6mm or 5mm) keeps the top sitting close and flush. Too long and the top spins or catches; too short and the disc presses in.

This flat-back labret stud features a 2mm cubic zirconia placed in a polished gold bezel setting. The bezel setting not only looks sleek and modern, but it is a great alternative to prong settings since it does get caught on your clothes or towels. The 2mm gemstone is small enough to be look cute and dainty, but large enough to really stand out in your favorite piercing. This stud may also be used for tragus, conch, helix and other cartilage ear piercings. It's a subtle, glamorous way to dress up any look.

    I love this piece for my nostril, it’s very comfortable and cute. It’s shiny but for a little extra shine I’d go up to the 2.5 or 3mm or go for the diamond. Love this bezel style, it’s polished looking and doesn’t get caught on clothing. I love that all the jewelry from Fresh Trends is available in rose gold!

    Like but don't love

    I bought in rose gold, which is a better match with my skin tone since I'm fair skinned and more of a pink person. This piece is a little big for my tragus piercing. I really wanted something tiny and minimalist. HOWEVER, I previously had a pronged stone in the same place and I definitely like a bezel flat setting as opposed to the prong. As always, Fresh Trends delivers a well made and substantial product. I remain a loyal customer.

    Nice sparkle!

    A got it in yellow gold, 16 gauge and 3/8" 10mm. Great quality. It's working well in my new conch piercing. The issue or problem that I had with it, is that I couldn't switch the top with any of the other 16 gauge flat back posts. Same with the tops from the other two.

    I purchased this product and it is worth every penny! I just love it and can tell it is of great quality. I read a few reviews that said they felt it was too large for their face, it is definitely a personal opinion but I feel like it is still very tiny yet noticeable. I ordered a 1.5mm stone in a labret from another company and I have to eat that cost because they won't take it back and it is way too small, (it looks like a blemish). So the 2mm stone in this is just enough bigger that you can see it but it is still very dainty. Plus FreshTrends will work with you to make sure you are happy and their customer service was excellent. I recommend staying with this company!

    I need one that just a little bit shorter than the shortish one everyone has. Do yall make them any shorter. It’s hurting my nose on the other side. Most of them do. I haven’t found the right size of hoop that fits snug on my nose either that is dainty enough.
