How to size a nose ring

A nose stud is defined by three things — its gauge (the bar's thickness), its backing style (how it stays in place), and its wearable length (the part that sits inside your piercing, which the style sets).

Gauge — the thickness of the bar

Most nose piercings use 20G (0.8mm) or 18G (1.0mm). Match the gauge to your piercing so the jewelry sits securely — the scale runs in reverse, so a smaller number is a thicker bar.

Backing style & length

The backing holds your stud in place, and it sets the wearable length:

  • Twist, Bone & L-Post — 1/4" (6mm) wearable length
  • Flat Back — 18G, 1/4" (6mm) wearable length
  • Straight Post — 3/8" (9mm), and can be bent to your fit
  • End Only — the decorative front on its own; a backing is sold separately

Will 18 gauge work with 16 gauge hole

18 Gauge is thinner than 16G so the 18g barbell should work with your 16G piercing, however your piercing 'hole' may eventually get smaller to adjust to the 18g barbell.
