Straight barbell size guide: how to measure length, straight barbell and industrial lengths, gauge 12G-18G, and standard length by piercing for nipple, tongue and industrial

How to size a straight barbell

A straight barbell is a straight post with a ball on each end. Two measurements make it fit right: gauge (the bar's thickness) and length (the wearable span between the two balls).

Gauge — the thickness of the bar

Match the gauge to your piercing so the jewelry sits securely. The scale runs in reverse — a smaller number is a thicker bar. Nipple, tongue and industrial piercings are typically 14G; smaller cartilage placements use 16G.

Length — the span between the balls

Length is measured between the inside of the two balls, not counting the balls themselves. Use the chart above for the standard by piercing — 1/2" (12.7mm) for nipples, 1 1/2" (38mm) for industrials. A fresh piercing is often fitted a little longer to allow for swelling, then downsized once it heals.

  • Small — for a 7/16" (11mm) wearable length. Includes a 5/8" (16mm) barbell.
