Curved barbell size guide: how to measure length, gauge 14G/16G/18G, and 6mm-11mm (1/4 to 7/16 inch) curved barbell lengths for eyebrow, rook, daith and floating navel piercings

How to size a curved barbell

A curved barbell is a gently curved post with a ball on each end, shaped to follow the piercing it sits in — navel, eyebrow, rook, daith, VCH, and vertical labret. Two measurements make it fit right: gauge (the bar's thickness) and length (the wearable span between the two ends).

Gauge — the thickness of the bar

Match the gauge to your piercing so the jewelry sits securely. The scale runs in reverse — a smaller number is a thicker bar. Eyebrow, rook and daith piercings are usually 16G; heavier placements like VCH and floating navel are typically 14G; more delicate placements take 18G.

Length — the span between the ends

Length is measured along the bar between the inside of the two ends, not counting the balls. Use the chart above for the standard by piercing — 5/16" (8mm) suits most eyebrow and rook piercings, while 3/8" (9.5mm) is common for navel and VCH. A fresh piercing is often fitted a little longer to leave room for swelling, then sized down once it heals — too long and the jewelry shifts or catches; too short and it can press in.
