How to size a navel ring

A navel ring is a curved barbell — the top and bottom ends thread onto a gently curved post that follows the shape of your piercing. Two measurements make it fit right: gauge (the bar's thickness) and length (the wearable span between the two ends).

Gauge — the thickness of the bar

Navel piercings are almost always 14G (1.6mm), and the gauge should match what your piercer used so the jewelry sits securely. The scale runs in reverse — a smaller number is a thicker bar.

Length — the span between the ends

Length is measured along the bar between the inside of the two ends — not counting the gems or balls. 10mm (3/8") fits most healed navels; a fresh piercing is usually fitted a little longer to leave room for swelling, then sized down once it heals. Too long and the jewelry shifts or catches; too short and it can press in.

Disappointing purchase

I had a barbell-style piercing from Maria Tash that I wore for approximately 10 years before the top piece fell off and the ring was lost. I purchased this as a replacement and am extremely disappointed. The threading of the top piece was very difficult to line up with the ring which makes it hard to put in. What's even worse though is that the piece has minimal threading which means it is not very secure and after a few short months, the top piece fell off once again and is lost because it's so small. The store offered to provide a replacement top piece - for $200 including shipping. I guess that's better than nothing, but when I pay premium prices, I expect premium quality and this did not meet my expectations. I am not going to waste any more of my money on inferior quality products and will purchase my replacement elsewhere.

Our threaded jewelry is handcrafted, and the length of the threading is limited by the specialized tools used to manufacture these fine jewelry components. While our internally threaded design is intended to provide a secure fit, we recognize that your experience did not reflect our expectations.

Because the top component was lost, we're unfortunately unable to inspect it to determine what may have caused it to come loose. We did offer a replacement top at a reduced cost, as our policy does not cover lost components.
