Day to Day Piercing Care: Dos & Don'ts

Here's some basic info to help you through the healing process:

  • While your piercing is healing, try not to touch it except when you're cleaning it and always wash your hands thoroughly before cleansing.

  • There's no reason to rotate your piercing. You could damage the delicate, healing skin by rotating the jewelry. In the past, rotating the jewelry was recommended, but it has been found to cause damage that can lead to infection and scarring. For happy healing, NEVER rotate your body jewelry.

  • Always be sure your bedding and the clothes you sleep in are clean. Also, make sure that the clothes you sleep in aren't likely to snag on your piercing, and avoid knitted blankets that can also snag and result in a very abrupt and uncomfortable awakening. In addition, try not to sleep on your new piercing.

  • It's generally accepted that healthy people heal faster and are less prone to infection. This goes for piercings, too. Eat well, drink lots of water, and cut down on stress. You can exercise, just remember to always shower immediately afterwards so that no grimy sweat gets into your piercing. If you get hair conditioner or any other shower products in your new piercing, make sure to rinse it out thoroughly and follow up with your regular piercing aftercare routine.
