How to size a nose ring

A nose stud is defined by three things — its gauge (the bar's thickness), its backing style (how it stays in place), and its wearable length (the part that sits inside your piercing, which the style sets).

Gauge — the thickness of the bar

Most nose piercings use 20G (0.8mm) or 18G (1.0mm). Match the gauge to your piercing so the jewelry sits securely — the scale runs in reverse, so a smaller number is a thicker bar.

Backing style & length

The backing holds your stud in place, and it sets the wearable length:

  • Twist, Bone & L-Post — 1/4" (6mm) wearable length
  • Flat Back — 18G, 1/4" (6mm) wearable length
  • Straight Post — 3/8" (9mm), and can be bent to your fit
  • End Only — the decorative front on its own; a backing is sold separately

Love everything but the length

I love this jewelry and it is very high quality. My only issue is that the twist style is waaay too long and if it rotates it sticks out of my nose… a lot. (My original piercer put it in for me and was shocked by the length.) I’m always paranoid and “checking” to be sure it hasn’t turned, which also isn’t a great look. So although this is my only issue, it’s a biggie - hence my three star review.

It’s just what I wanted. My only complaint if I had to mention one is that I wish the end of the L farthest from the stone was shorter because of where my nose is pierced it sticks out of my nostril if it turns. Other than that it’s perfect. Very high quality and comfortable. The diamond is very sparkly too. Love it thanks!

Bought this in yellow gold and the twist so that you can’t see it as much as my old L post and I LOVED it when it came in the mail. It also fits so that the diamond isn’t at an angle when you twist around the inside so fits perfectly into my piercing hole. Amazing customer service and amazing jewelry. Totally worth the wait.
