Hoop and ring size guide: how to measure diameter for seam rings, clickers, captives and circular barbells, with diameter and gauge sizes and standard hoop diameter by piercing

How to size a hoop or ring

Seam rings, clickers, captives and circular barbells are all sized by two things: gauge (the wire thickness) and diameter (the width across the inside of the ring).

Gauge — the thickness of the wire

Gauge should match your piercing so the ring sits securely. The scale runs in reverse — a smaller number is a thicker wire. Most cartilage and facial hoops are 16G; heavier placements like nipple and VCH are 14G.

Diameter — the width across the ring

Diameter is measured across the inside of the ring, not counting the bead. A smaller diameter sits snug and close to the piercing; a larger one hangs with more movement. Use the chart above to find the standard diameter for your piercing.

Rose gold

I bought the 14K rose gold of these. It looks more like yellow gold. I was told if I wanted it to appear more rose in color I would have to buy 18K rose gold. I was told all this after I received the item and was also told I could not upgrade it to 18K. It’s a gorgeous piece of jewelry. A lot smaller than I expected for what ever reason.
